ENGL 3 (period 9) Assignments

1. Watch the video clip from the movie Dead Poets Society, and then write a response to it. What do you think Mr. Keating was trying to convey to the students? Why did he have them do this What are your thoughts about poetry? A paragraph response will be fine.
2. Define 5 more of the SAT words and write a sentence for each from the list of 500 most important words. Don't do any you have done before. *Please put both of these on one google doc that you turn in on Classroom as usual.

1. Study the subject/verb agreement rules in sentences with a compound subject. Print if you are able. They are tricky and you have to know the rule and can't just go by which one "sounds" right.
2. Take the quiz on subject/verb agreement.
3. Write 3 Six Word Stories. A six word story is one in which the reader can infer the whole story by just reading the six words. Here are a few examples: 1.Born a twin; graduated only child. 2. "I hate you..." her last words. 3. Turns out, the injury was fatal. Be creative; they are fun:)

* Today you should be receiving a google form in your email about class selection/schedule for next year. I need you to get this done by next Tuesday, May 5th. When you have done it, send me the word "done" on a google doc that you submit here on classroom like everything else, and you will get your second grade for the week for me-a 100!

1. Listen to TED talk "What Makes a Good Life?" Make sure you are watching/listening to the correct one on the page...
2.Write a response about what you watched...your thoughts, connections, etc.

1. Read "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin.
2. Take quiz over short story.
3. Watch "Fireflies" video clip and respond with your thoughts about what you saw (a paragraph).

1. Define and write sentences for 5 more unfamiliar words from the SAT 500 list.
2. Read the poem "Richard Cory" and complete the google form about the poem.
3. Read and summarize the article of the week...5-6 sentences.
4. Play around on freerice.com with vocabulary and see how far you can get and let me know. It is a vocabulary game; the words get progressively harder as you continue. The answers are multiple choice and you fill a bowl with grains of rice that are donated to those in need in other countries. It is fun and addicting and will help improve your vocabulary for SAT/ACT tests and reading/writing/speaking.
